Junior Golf at Lakewood Golf Club

Award Winning Junior Golf Program

Lakewood Golf Club has a nationally recognized year round junior golf program serving
the youth of  New Orleans. Lakewood Golf Club is committed to growing golf and developing golfers for a lifetime. Our main goal is to have fun and give the children an excellent learning atmosphere with an emphasis on family.

Along with our year round weekly golf classes and individual junior golf instruction, Lakewood Golf Club is the leader in supporting competitive junior golf and is home of the prestigious Tommy Moore Memorial Junior Championship. Tommy grew at Lakewood and went on to be the # 1 ranked junior golfer in the United States in 1980. As an amateur Tommy had a top ten finish in the PGA Tour's New Orleans Open held at Lakewood Golf Club and won the Louisiana Amateur Championship. Tommy played his collegiate golf at Oklahoma State and during his time there he was All-American, Academic All American and Oklahoma State won the NCAA Collegiate Championship. Tommy went on to receive his PGA Tour Card. Lakewood is a major supporter of the Kelly Gibson Junior Golf Tour. Kelly grew up with Tommy and like Tommy was the Louisiana Amateur Champion, Collegiate All-American and had a successful career on the PGA Tour. Lakewood Golf Club plays host to the Arrowhead Junior Tour, host many high school matches and practice opportunities to many high school golf teams. In 2011 Lakewood Golf Club will be the host of the Gulf States PGA Junior Championship.

The weekly classes on Saturday are $10 per 90 minute session and $5 for each additional family member. Each child receives a golf cap, bag tag, donated golf merchandise from our many friends. Each week we provide refreshments and we hold special bar-b-que events during the year.  In addition to our regular teaching staff we have visiting instructors that range from the Tulane Women's Golf Team, University of New Orleans Men's Golf Team, local PGA Professionals, PGA Tour Veterans, aspiring professional golfers, collegiate golfers and the top junior golfers in the area. Our instructors not only teach the game, they teach the values that are learned through golf.

The program under the direction of Lakewood Golf Club's PGA Director of Golf Brad Weaver is run by PGA Member Jimmy Headrick. Jimmy's promotion of junior golf in the New Orleans area goes back 35 years. He was the recipient of the inaugural Gulf States PGA Junior Golf Leader Award in 1988. In 2008 he was the recipient of the PGA of America Junior Golf Leader Award out of a membership of 28,000.  In 2008 he was the recipient of the New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Humanitarian Award. In 2010 he was selected as one of the Top 50 Best Junior Golf Instructors in the United States and Canada by U.S. Kids Golf. In 2010 on his first year of eligibilty Jimmy was inducted into the Gulf States PGA Hall of Fame.
